BMW AG (an abbreviation of Bayerische Motoren Werke

Before World War II

In 1916, the company signed a contract for the production of V12
engines for Austro-Hungary. Needing extra financing, Rapp gets support
of Camillo Castiglioni and Max Friz, the company recreated
as the Bayerische Motoren Werke GmbH. Super extended caused
difficulties, Rapp left the company, and the management of the company
was made by the Austrian industrialist Franz Josef Popp in 1917,
the company was named BMW AG in 1918.
In 1919, Franz Diemer set the first world record for BMW, rising to a
height of 9760 meters on an airplane with an engine BMW.
After World War I, the Treaty of Versailles in 1919 banned the production of aircraft in Germany. Otto closed his factory and BMW switched to the production of brakes for trains.
